Inulin can first be described as a fibrous carbohydrate that can be classified as a starch. This substance can be found in a variety amount of foods such as vegetables, fruits, and herbs. Inulin is in the class of compounds known as fructans and is a naturally occurring oligosaccharide, meaning it has several simple sugars linked together.

Since inulin is not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, it is considered to be a fibre. Inulin has a sweeter taste to it, so some people may definitely use this as a sweetener for a variety of things.

Since it is a fibre and is not digested in the gastrointestinal tract, it goes down to the large intestine where your bacteria uses it to prosper, making it considered to be prebiotic.

Are There Any Inulin Side Effects or Interactions?

Inulin is non-allergic and safe for most people to consume considering it’s completely natural and present in many foods. Studies have shown that chicory is rarely allergenic, and when foods containing inulin cause reactions, it’s usually due to other compounding ingredients like peanuts, milk, soy, shellfish and wheat.

That being said, some people don’t react very well to eating high amounts of certain types of fibers or carbohydrates. Inulin is considered a FODMAP, a class of carbohydrates that are rapidly fermented in the colon and can produce gas and digestive issues for some people.

For people with sensitives to FODMAPs (like those with irritable bowel syndrome on an IBS diet or who have inflammatory bowel disorders), drawing water into the colon in large quantities can lead to worsened symptoms, like cramps, gas and bloated stomach. (12) It’s a good idea to add inulin or other concentrated fibers to your diet slowly to test their effects and also to drink plenty of water to help with lubrication.

What is Lactobacillus Acidophilus?

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a bacteria that exists naturally in the body, primarily in the intestines and the vagina. Lactobacillus acidophilus has been used as a probiotic, or “friendly bacteria.”

Lactobacillus acidophilus has been used in alternative medicine as a likely effective aid in treating diarrhea in children with rotavirus.

Lactobacillus acidophilus has been used in alternative medicine as a possibly effective aid (in children or adults) in preventing diarrhea caused by antibiotics, travel, chemotherapy, or hospitalization. Lactobacillus acidophilus is also possibly effective in treating irritable bowel syndrome, bacterial vaginal infection, colic in babies, lung infections in children, skin problems in children who are allergic to milk, and other conditions.

Lactobacillus acidophilus has also been used to treat lactose intolerance, Crohn’s disease, overgrowth of bacteria in the intestines, or vaginal yeast infections caused by antibiotics. However, research has shown that lactobacillus acidophilus may not be effective in treating these conditions.

Other uses not proven with research have included treating indigestion, urinary tract infections, intestinal problems in premature babies, high cholesterol, lyme disease, cold sores, acne, cancer, the common cold, and other conditions.

It is not certain whether lactobacillus acidophilus is effective in treating any medical condition. Medicinal use of this product has not been approved by the FDA. Lactobacillus acidophilus should not be used in place of medication prescribed for you by your doctor.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is often sold as an herbal supplement. There are no regulated manufacturing standards in place for many herbal compounds and some marketed supplements have been found to be contaminated with toxic metals or other drugs. Herbal/health supplements should be purchased from a reliable source to minimize the risk of contamination.

What is Lactobacillus Casei?

Probiotics such as L. casei are generally considered safe and potentially helpful in regulating the digestive system. There have been many promising studies involving L. casei.

Researchers in a 2007 trial studied a probiotic drink containing L. casei, L. bulgaricus, and S. thermophiles. They concluded that it may reduce the incidence of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and C. difficile-associated diarrhea. No adverse events were reported.
